The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Surajudeen Basiru, has urged Nigerian women abroad to support President Bola Tinubu’s reforms and the ruling party as we approach the 2027 general elections.

Basiru stated that the APC is focused on increasing opportunities for women within the party and in public governance. He said gender inclusion is a key part of their political philosophy.

He made these comments while giving a keynote speech titled, “From Renewed Hope to Lasting Impact: Diaspora Women Advancing Impact Continuity,” at the APC Diaspora/Global Women Summit 2026 held in Rome, Italy.

A copy of the speech was shared with our reporter on Sunday.

The summit brought together APC women leaders and members from around the world.

He mentioned that Nigerian women in the diaspora are among the country's best resources. They excel in fields like academics, medicine, law, engineering, entrepreneurship, diplomacy, finance, technology, and public service.

Basiru added that, apart from their professional successes, women abroad actively contribute to Nigeria’s economy through investments, remittances, charity, skills sharing, and advocacy. He noted that their successes abroad show the great potential of Nigerian women when they are given chances to succeed.

He said, “The APC acknowledges that diaspora women are not mere supporters of government programs but strategic partners in the realization of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“You are ambassadors of Nigeria, promoting our democratic values and serving as a bridge between Nigeria and the international community. Your international connections, technical skills, financial resources, and policy insights can greatly help national development.”

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, Basiru encouraged women to engage in civic activities, fight misinformation, support democratic governance, mentor younger women, and expand the party’s outreach globally.

He said, “As a party, we are committed to increasing opportunities for women within the structures of the party and in public governance. We believe inclusive leadership leads to better governance outcomes.

“The party will continue to support the participation of women in political leadership, policy-making, party administration, electoral mobilization, and democratic governance at all levels.

“We also see the need to improve collaboration with our diaspora chapters by creating more platforms for engagement, sharing knowledge, policy discussions, promoting investment, and leadership development. Your ideas, experiences, and contributions are important as we work to build a stronger, more responsive political party.”

While discussing Tinubu's achievements, Basiru mentioned that removing the fuel subsidy was a tough but necessary choice. He said it has created more room for investment in infrastructure and social development. He noted that crude oil production has risen to over 1.7 million barrels per day, boosting government revenue and investor confidence.

He also highlighted that the Tinubu administration has pushed for local government financial autonomy after a key Supreme Court ruling. They have also started national talks on creating state police as part of wider constitutional and security reforms.

Basiru pointed out that the administration has begun major infrastructure projects. These include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lagos-Sokoto Super Highway, and the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road. These projects aim to improve connectivity, support business activities, and speed up regional development.

The APC National Secretary also shared that Nigeria’s foreign reserves have surpassed $51 billion under Tinubu’s administration, the highest in the last 17 years.

Basiru concluded by saying that many women in Tinubu’s administration have played a big part in the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He called on women in the diaspora to support the continuation of the APC-led government past 2027.
