Afrobeats star David "Davido" Adeleke has said he is not interested in a political career. This is despite his family’s long ties to government and his work in his uncle Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign in Osun State.
Davido made this clear on X in response to fans urging him to run for office after helping secure his uncle’s re-election as governor.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that the “Timeless” hitmaker led the youth campaign for his uncle, the Accord Party (AP) candidate.
During Saturday’s election, Davido also urged officials to use the front camera on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) after the other camera stopped working. He accused some politicians of trying to rig the election and cause trouble before and during the poll.
In a post on Monday, the “Unavailable” hitmaker said he had finished his part in the election, indicating he does not plan to move into an official political role.
"I brought no one! No one defended me! I backed my family on my own!! You guys are ruthless and disgusting! Eeewwww!
"I have done my job! Nigerian politics is evil, and I don’t want to be a part of it till God help us,” said Davido.
Concerns About Politics
This is not the first time Davido has spoken about the lack of transparency in Nigeria’s political scene. Before the recent Osun State governorship election, he had a livestream session with Carter Efe where he discussed politics and questioned the credibility of the electoral process.
He mentioned that his popularity and strong public support might help him in politics. But he made it clear that he would only think about running for office when Nigeria ensures free, fair, and credible elections.
Davido stated that he would win against any opponent if the elections were transparent and if voters showed up in large numbers to cast their votes.
Background
Davido’s comments about avoiding politics came after he sent a congratulatory message to his uncle for his re-election and had a public exchange with House of Representatives member James Faleke about the issues surrounding the governorship election.
In an X post, Davido accused Mr Faleke and two other APC lawmakers of trying to "upturn the election result."
He also claimed that Osun voters had turned against the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, while saying he would never support the ruling party.
Mr Faleke, who represents Ikeja Federal Constituency, campaigned for the APC candidate in Osun. He rejected Davido’s claim, saying he could not influence the election's outcome.
The lawmaker argued that his campaigning in Osun was similar to Davido supporting his uncle’s party during the election.
Davido later dismissed Mr Faleke’s explanation in another X post and mocked his political career. "Politics is not a career. Get a Job!" he wrote.
