The Enugu State Police have seized 195 vehicles due to issues with vehicle registration and number plates. They warned that the owners will be taken to court under the law.
The police shared this information in a statement on Tuesday from their spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. This followed a statewide operation led by the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa.
The statement said the operation is part of a nationwide effort to enforce the ban on unregistered vehicles. It also targets those with covered, damaged, unclear, wrongly placed, unauthorized, or missing number plates.
The police said the impounded vehicles include ones without proper registration. Some displayed only one number plate instead of the two required by law. Others had number plates that were covered, damaged, unclear, unauthorized, or wrongly placed.
"The affected vehicle owners will be charged to court and prosecuted accordingly," the statement said.
The police mentioned that this operation follows the National Road Traffic Regulations and other related laws.
Giwa praised the officers who took part in the operation. He urged drivers to fully meet vehicle registration and number plate rules.
"He warned that the Command would keep up the enforcement and make sure all offenders are prosecuted as the law says," the statement added.
The commissioner also reminded everyone about the order from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. This order tells all state police commands to enforce the ban on unregistered vehicles and take action against those who break the rules.
According to the police, this order came because unregistered and wrongly identified vehicles can create security problems. These vehicles are often linked to crimes and break traffic laws.
Giwa also told officers to avoid extorting, harassing, or acting improperly during this enforcement. He warned that any officer caught doing so would face disciplinary action.
He advised drivers using unregistered vehicles or those with number plates that are covered, damaged, unclear, unauthorized, or wrongly placed to follow the law to avoid being taken to court.
