The Kano State Police Command has seized 81 vehicles that were found on the roads with covered number plates, defaced registration numbers, or without any registration at all. They warned that the owners and drivers will face prosecution.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, shared this information while speaking to journalists on Monday. He said this issue is a security threat.
"Kano State Police Command has noticed a worrying rise in the number of vehicles on our roads with covered number plates, defaced registration numbers, or no registration at all.
"This is not just a minor traffic offence. It is a clear attempt to hide identities. Criminals use these vehicles to commit crimes and avoid being caught. We cannot let Kano State be a hiding place for such activities," Bakori stated.
He mentioned that the command started a public awareness campaign before they began the enforcement action.
"Before we started the enforcement, we ran a big public education campaign using radio, television, social media, and live phone-in shows to inform the public," he explained.
"We reminded vehicle owners of their duty to ensure proper registration and that number plates are displayed clearly. We gave plenty of notice so that no one can claim they did not know," the police commissioner added.
Bakori also mentioned that three vehicles were stopped under suspicious conditions during the operation.
"Three vehicles with their occupants were stopped under suspicious circumstances. When we questioned them, the occupants could not give clear answers about who owned the vehicles and why they were being used," Bakori said.
"The suspects and vehicles are now being processed for further investigation. We will make sure the law is fully applied," he added.
The police commissioner explained that the operation aims to improve public safety and ensure all vehicles on the road can be identified.
"This exercise is not about harassment but about safety. We want to make sure every vehicle on our roads can be identified and traced," Bakori said.
He urged drivers to follow the law by properly registering their vehicles and showing standard number plates.
"I urge all vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and that standard number plates are attached and clearly visible," Bakori said.
