A former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Gombe State, Kelmi Lazarus, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party. He is backing the party’s candidate, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, as the governorship election approaches.

Lazarus was the SDP candidate in the 2023 Gombe State governorship election. He is a former state chairman of the SDP and used to be the General Manager of Radio Gombe.

He made his announcement in a statement on Wednesday. Lazarus said he joined the PDP after talking with his supporters.

He expressed trust in Pantami’s ability to lead the state well. “I joined the Peoples Democratic Party after careful consideration and consultation with my supporters. My decision is based on my conviction that Professor Isa Ali Pantami possesses the vision, competence, integrity and leadership capacity required to provide purposeful governance and advance the development of Gombe State,” he said.

Lazarus believes Pantami is the best candidate in the race. He urged the people of Gombe State to support the PDP for the betterment of the state. “Professor Pantami stands out as the most qualified candidate in this race. I therefore call on my supporters and the good people of Gombe State to rally behind the PDP in our collective interest for the progress and prosperity of the state,” he added.

The Gombe State chapter of the PDP welcomed Lazarus’ defection. They said it is a big boost for the party’s support base. They believe it shows that more political leaders trust Pantami’s leadership and the party’s vision.

The PDP assured Lazarus and his supporters that they will have equal chances to help in building “a more united, peaceful and prosperous Gombe State.”
