A former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Gombe State, Kelmi Lazarus, has switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He declared his support for the party's candidate, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, ahead of the upcoming governorship election.

Lazarus was the SDP candidate in the 2023 Gombe State governorship election. He has also served as the state chairman of the party and as the General Manager of Radio Gombe.

He announced his decision in a statement on Wednesday. Lazarus said he joined the PDP after talking extensively with his supporters.

He also expressed trust in Pantami’s ability to lead the state well.

“I joined the Peoples Democratic Party after careful consideration and consultation with my supporters. My decision is based on my conviction that Professor Isa Ali Pantami possesses the vision, competence, integrity and leadership capacity required to provide purposeful governance and advance the development of Gombe State,” he said.

Lazarus described Pantami as the best candidate in the race. He urged the people of Gombe to support the PDP for the state’s development.

“Professor Pantami stands out as the most qualified candidate in this race. I therefore call on my supporters and the good people of Gombe State to rally behind the PDP in our collective interest for the progress and prosperity of the state,” Lazarus added.

In response, the Gombe State chapter of the PDP called Lazarus’ move a big boost for the party. They said it showed growing confidence among political leaders in Pantami’s leadership and the party's plans.

The PDP welcomed Lazarus and his supporters warmly. They promised equal chances for everyone to help build what they described as “a more united, peaceful and prosperous Gombe State.”
