Five people have lost their lives in a serious accident involving a car and a truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos. The crash happened early Saturday morning at Sawmill, close to Mowo Bus Stop.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, got a distress call at 5:16 am and quickly sent its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene.
When they arrived, the team found that a Toyota Camry with the registration number FKJ 630KS had a head-on collision with an Iveco truck that had the registration number T28081 LA.
A statement from LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said initial investigations showed that the accident was due to over-speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and had a head-on collision with the oncoming Iveco truck," the statement said.
The crash resulted in the deaths of five adult males who were in the car. "Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry. The remains of the victims were carefully recovered, bagged with dignity, and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further necessary action," it added.
The statement also mentioned the various responders at the scene. These included the LASEMA Dolphin Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and police officers from the Morogbo Division.
Two tow trucks were sent to remove the wreckage from the expressway. The vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division. The road has now been cleared and is open for traffic again.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and prayed for their souls. He urged drivers to avoid over-speeding, dangerous overtaking, and other risky driving behaviors, especially in the early morning.
He reminded everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility. The permanent secretary also said LASEMA is dedicated to swift emergency response and teamwork with other agencies, following the Lagos State Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which aims to protect the lives and property of residents.
