Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has given an extra ₦115 million every month to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

With this new funding, the total monthly support from the state government to the school rises from ₦161 million to ₦276 million.

This information came from a statement by Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), on Tuesday in Enugu.

Onyia, who is also a professor, mentioned that the governor appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at ESUT to stop their ongoing strike and return to teaching. He assured them that any outstanding issues would be dealt with through good dialogue.

The latest increase brings the total rise in the monthly support for ESUT to ₦140 million since February 2026.

Onyia explained that the extra funding is to help the university meet its financial responsibilities, especially towards its staff and students, and to keep providing quality education.

"Governor Mbah has shown again that his government cares about workers' welfare and the education of our youth.

This additional ₦115 million monthly support is a big commitment of public funds to help strengthen ESUT and ensure it can meet its obligations to staff and students," Onyia said.

The SSG noted that before February 2026, the state government was giving ESUT ₦136 million each month.

He added that in February, the government started an extra ₦25 million monthly support for the ESUT College of Medicine to help pay for 120 additional staff.

This increased the total monthly government support to ₦161 million.

Now, with the new ₦115 million increase, the monthly support will reach ₦276 million. This will help ESUT meet the salary agreements made between ASUU and the federal government.

The SSG urged ASUU-ESUT members to respond to the government’s support by ending the strike and returning to classes. He emphasized the need to avoid any further disruption to students’ education.

"We ask ASUU-ESUT to respond positively to this by resuming classes while we work together to settle any remaining issues.

Our students should not suffer because of disagreements that can be resolved peacefully," he said.

The SSG reiterated Governor Mbah’s focus on workers' welfare and the ongoing growth of ESUT. He pointed out that this funding increase shows the government’s commitment to education and a smooth academic calendar.

He urged the management of ESUT and ASUU to talk and work together to solve the outstanding problems.

Onyia stated that the main goal should be to ensure that students receive an uninterrupted, quality education.

He assured the university that the Mbah administration would keep supporting it with available resources and take necessary steps to strengthen the institution, helping it to fulfill its role as a leading university of science and technology.
