The Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, to seven years in prison without a chance to pay a fine. He was convicted for advertising cannabis sativa on social media.
This information came from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). They released a statement on Wednesday through Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the Media and Advocacy Officer for their Kano Strategic Command.
Idris was found guilty by Justice S.M. Shuaibu on July 14, 2026.
The NDLEA praised the Federal High Court in Kano for making a strong decision against the public sale of cannabis sativa. They said, "The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today commends the Federal High Court, Kano, for delivering a landmark judgment in a matter arising from public advertisement and sale of cannabis sativa."
On April 22, 2026, NDLEA operatives in Kano, following orders from State Commander CN DY Lawal, arrested Ashiru Idris. They acted after seeing a video on social media where he openly advertised cannabis sativa for sale.
The NDLEA mentioned that the seven-year sentence will start from the date of the judgment.
Commander CN DY Lawal of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command said the judgment sends a strong message to people involved in drug promotion. He stated, "This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible leads and ensure offenders are brought to justice."
The agency also asked the public to help fight drug trafficking and substance abuse. They encouraged people to give useful information to security agencies.
