Security operatives at Prince Abubakar Audu University in Anyigba, along with the school’s management, have arrested a 400-level student for allegedly trying to force fresh students into a cult. The student, Adejo Ojonimi, 25, studies Economics and has the matriculation number 23EC1103. He was caught on June 19, 2026, after a complaint was made by another student from the Department of Food Science and Technology.

The complainant said Ojonimi, who lives in the NTA area behind the campus, tried to pressure him into joining the Black Axe Confraternity. The student said that when he refused, he was assaulted, injured, and threatened with serious consequences if he did not agree to join.

"Out of fear for my safety, I left my home and hid for several days before I reported the matter," the complainant told investigators.

A preliminary investigation by the university's Security Unit found visible injuries on the complainant when he made the report. Security sources said the suspect admitted some parts of the assault and the threats during questioning.

Investigators also examined Ojonimi's mobile phone and found chats with other suspected cult members using the term "Egede," which security officials said is linked to the Black Axe Confraternity. Information from the phone included details about other people who might be connected to the group and will be used for further security and administrative actions.

The university stated that the suspect has been handed over to the relevant security agency for more investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to this incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, praised the university's security staff and others involved in the operation. He reaffirmed the school’s strict stance against cultism, violence, and crime on and around the campus.

"Let this serve as a strong warning to students and anyone involved in cult-related activities: keep away from Prince Abubakar Audu University. We are dedicated to ensuring a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, research, and community service," Usman said.

As second-semester exams are set to begin, the Vice-Chancellor urged students and staff to quickly report any suspicious activities or behaviors that go against the university’s security rules. He assured everyone in the university community that all reports would be handled with strict confidentiality and seriousness.
