At least three workers from the Kano State Road Traffic Agency, known as KAROTA, were injured when a group of angry youths attacked them on Wednesday.

The Public Relations Officer of KAROTA, Abubakar Ibrahim Sharada, confirmed the news in a statement shared with The PUNCH on Thursday.

The statement said the incident happened when a Sharon commercial bus was struck by a trailer in Kwanar Dawaki town on Zaria Road.

Ibrahim Abubakar Ibrahim, who is the second-in-command of the KAROTA patrol team on Zaria Road, said they had stopped the Sharon bus for a routine check. Suddenly, a speeding truck driver crashed into the bus, causing it to flip multiple times. Many passengers were badly hurt.

Seeing the injured passengers, the youths attacked the KAROTA officials and seriously hurt them, according to the statement.

The statement also mentioned that the truck driver who caused the crash ran away while everyone was focused on helping the passengers and the injured KAROTA officials.

Faisal Mahmud Kabir, the Managing Director of KAROTA, urged the public to support and respect uniformed personnel on duty. He said these officers are not enemies but are there to keep order on the roads.

He praised KAROTA staff for their dedication and hard work in carrying out their duties.

Motorists in Kano have often complained about how KAROTA officers set up roadblocks on major roads. Some drivers say the agency has taken control of parts of federal highways that connect Kano to other states.

KAROTA officials, who wear yellow uniforms, are frequently seen at these roadblocks. Some people accuse them of extorting money from drivers, particularly those with commercial vehicles.

Key roads linked to KAROTA activities include Maiduguri, Hadejia, Gwarzo, Zaria, and Katsina roads, all of which connect Kano to nearby states.
