The Kwara State Police have arrested a suspected cultist and seized a homemade gun during a security operation in Ilorin, the state capital. This is part of ongoing efforts to break down violent crime and stop cult activities in the state.

The suspect is Agboola Olamilekan. Police operatives, alongside other security agencies and the Kwara State Polytechnic Security Unit, caught him during an intelligence-led operation.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had the homemade gun in his possession. The police described this operation as another success in their fight against cultism and illegal weapons.

On Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said this operation is part of the command's bigger plan to stop criminals from operating in Kwara. They want to do this through proactive and intelligence-led policing.

She said, "The operation forms part of the Command’s sustained efforts to disrupt cult-related activities, curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, and deny criminal elements the opportunity to thrive within Kwara State."

Ejire-Adeyemi also mentioned that investigations are ongoing to find and arrest other members of the criminal group connected to the suspect. She promised that the police will keep working hard to ensure that those disturbing public peace are brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ojo Adekimi, reacted to the news. He reaffirmed the command’s dedication to continuing their fight against cultism and other violent crimes. He stressed that security agencies will not back down in their efforts to clear the state of criminals.

Adekimi stated, "Every successful operation represents another step towards dismantling criminal networks and enhancing public safety across the state through proactive and intelligence-led policing."

He added that the command is committed to supporting the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu. They will do this through intelligence-led policing, strategic partnerships, and ongoing operations to dismantle criminal groups in the state.

This recent arrest is part of a growing number of cult-related arrests in Ilorin in the last few weeks. It shows the command’s increased efforts to crack down on violent groups and illegal firearms.

The PUNCH remembers that on June 26, the command arrested two suspected cult members. They are 33-year-old Abdullahi Jimoh Omotoho and Abdullahi Kareem Kawu, known as "B-Red." These arrests also came from intelligence-led operations.

Police recovered a homemade gun from these suspects too, saying their arrests followed reliable intelligence and ongoing surveillance in Ilorin.
