Two people have been killed after a man with a machete attacked a cinema in Lekki, Lagos State. The attack happened on Friday night and caused panic among moviegoers and staff.
The attacker, armed with a machete and a knife, tried to enter the cinema but security stopped him. Eyewitnesses said he got violent when he was blocked and started attacking the security guards.
SP Adebisi Abimbola, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the event on Saturday. She said the assailant stabbed one guard to death and injured another.
Adebisi also mentioned that the attacker was later mobbed by a crowd and died from the injuries. "Two people have been confirmed dead," the police spokesperson said.
She added that authorities were still looking into the identities of those who died and the details of the attack. According to her, the suspect seemed to be homeless and possibly under the influence of drugs during the incident.
The Chief Security Officer of the cinema has been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation, according to Vanguard. Adebisi noted that police are working to get and review the CCTV footage from the cinema.
This footage will help them understand what happened and if anyone else was involved. The police have started a full investigation into the attack and the deaths that resulted from it.
As of now, the police had not released the names of the two people who died or shared updates on the injured security guard's condition. The investigation is still ongoing.
