The Lagos State Government has questioned an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps. This follows a viral video that appeared to show him taking a ₦20,000 bribe from someone breaking environmental laws.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared this update on X on Friday. He called the officer’s alleged actions unacceptable and against the agency's ethics and values.
Wahab stated that the officer has received a formal query. A Personnel Management Board will look into the matter, following the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
"I have seen a viral video that allegedly shows an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps accepting a bribe from a lawbreaker. Such behavior is not acceptable and goes against the rules, ethics, and core values of the Agency," Wahab wrote.
"As a result, we have swiftly issued the officer a query. This will be followed by setting up a Personnel Management Board (PMB) to investigate this case according to the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations."
The commissioner emphasized that the state has a zero-tolerance policy on corruption. He warned that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face serious disciplinary actions.
"The Lagos State Government has a strict no-tolerance policy towards corruption and any misconduct in the public service. Any officer found guilty will face the necessary disciplinary measures as outlined by the relevant regulations," he stated.
Wahab also advised the public against bribing government officials. He pointed out that both giving and receiving bribes are criminal acts.
"I want to remind Lagosians that offering a bribe is just as illegal as receiving one. We encourage everyone to follow the law and not try to compromise enforcement officers.
"Together, we can maintain integrity, boost public trust, and create a more accountable society," he added.
In the query letter that accompanied the commissioner’s post, the officer was accused of taking ₦20,000 from someone breaking the law. This alleged act was recorded and shared on social media.
The letter, marked MOE/LAGESC/431/56 and dated July 10, 2026, mentioned that the footage had been viewed by the Lagos State Governor.
"You are alleged to have collected the sum of Twenty Thousand Naira (₦20,000) from an offender. This act was recorded and posted on social media, where it was seen by His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State," the letter said.
It labeled the alleged behavior as corruption and extortion, stating that it was serious misconduct under the Public Service Rules.
The officer was instructed to provide a written explanation within 48 hours on why disciplinary actions should not be taken against him.
"Your representation (if any) must reach the undersigned officer within 48 hours of receiving this letter. If you fail to respond within the given time, disciplinary action will be taken against you," the letter concluded.
