The Lagos State Task Force has seized 309 motorcycles during a recent operation on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. This action aims to improve traffic flow, restore order, and boost security along this busy road.
This operation is part of a series of actions by the Lagos State Government against commercial motorcycle operators on restricted routes. Authorities are stepping up efforts to enforce traffic, environmental, and public safety rules.
The operation, done with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and the Lagos State Police Command, also targeted illegal structures, street trading, and other environmental violations. This happened around the Alaba Rago International Market and other areas along the expressway.
Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, the agency’s spokesperson, said this operation is part of the state government’s plan to enhance public safety. He added that it also aims to prevent criminals from operating under the cover of commercial activities, as reported by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday.
Mr. Gbadeyan mentioned that the enforcement covered many spots along the ECOWAS Road and the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Some of these spots include Orile-Iganmu Bus Stop, Suuru-Alaba Bus Stop, and Okoko Bus Stop, among others.
He confirmed that 309 commercial motorcycles were seized during the operation.
This exercise shows the state’s ongoing enforcement of rules against commercial motorcycles on major highways and other banned routes under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. State officials have defended this policy, stating it aims to improve road safety, reduce traffic jams, and limit crimes linked to motorcycles in restricted areas.
Mr. Gbadeyan explained that the enforcement team also removed illegal kiosks, makeshift stalls, and unauthorized structures. They cleared away abandoned items, domestic animals in public spaces, and building materials blocking the highway.
He noted that the operation helped improve traffic, cleared public spaces, and ensured better environmental compliance in the affected areas.
The spokesperson emphasized that the seized motorcycles will be processed for forfeiture in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
He added that the agency will keep conducting similar operations across the state until the laws are fully followed.
After the operation, Adetayo Akerele, the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, called the level of lawlessness along the corridor alarming. He pointed out that illegal ticketing, street trading, and motorcycle activities in restricted areas have led to crime, traffic congestion, and environmental issues.
"No stone will be left unturned in our determination to restore sanity. It is high time criminal elements operating in Lagos State desist from these unlawful activities or relocate.
"We will keep enforcing the law without fear or favour to guarantee a safer, cleaner, and more orderly Lagos for everyone," Mr. Akerele said.
