The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 31-year-old Buriba Israel from Jambutu in Yola South Local Government Area. He is accused of cyberbullying and intimidating a First-Class Chief, Hamman Bachama, Daniel Samaila.
On Friday, the police spokesman, Suleiman Nguroje, released a statement. He condemned the use of social media for cyberbullying, intimidation, and spreading false and harmful claims against traditional leaders and respected people in the community.
The statement said that early investigations showed that the suspect made and shared social media posts with accusations against the traditional ruler.
“The publications were offensive, disrespectful, and could damage their reputation and dignity,” it read.
The police arrested the suspect after a formal complaint and an investigation into his online activities. They also recovered electronic devices and materials linked to the alleged crimes. These items are being examined as the investigation goes on.
The command reminded everyone that while citizens have the right to express themselves, they must do so responsibly and according to the law.
“The use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate, defame, or spread harmful content against individuals or institutions will not be accepted,” the command stated.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, Kabir Hassan, has ordered a thorough investigation of the case. He said that if the suspect is found guilty, he should face serious consequences under the law.
The statement also emphasized that the police are committed to protecting the dignity of traditional institutions and maintaining public order. They will ensure that the digital space is not used for intimidation, cyberbullying, or any other illegal activities.
