The Bauchi State Police have arrested three members of a vigilante group. They are looking into how a 39-year-old man named Abdulrazak Ibrahim died while in the group's custody in Bakin Kura, Bauchi Local Government Area.
The police shared this news in a statement on Friday. Nafiu Habib, the Police Public Relations Officer, provided the details.
Habib said the police got a report on Thursday, August 20, 2026, around 6:39 pm. The Chairman of the Vigilante Group in Bakin Kura made the report.
He explained that the deceased was called to the vigilante office after his mother, Hauwa Ibrahim, reported a theft.
"The deceased was invited to the Vigilante Office following a complaint of theft lodged by his mother, one Hauwa Ibrahim, for investigation, recovery of stolen properties, and to identify possible receivers.
“It is unfortunate that during the process, Abdulrazak Ibrahim died while in the custody of the vigilantes," Habib said in the statement.
After getting the report, the command quickly sent detectives from the 'A' Division Township to the scene. The PPRO noted that the three vigilantes on duty at the time were arrested and are being held for questioning.
Habib said that Abdulrazak's body was taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. It was placed in the mortuary for preservation.
He added that a physical examination found no visible signs of violence on the body.
"However, an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the actual cause of death," he stated.
The PPRO mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a full investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served.
He stressed the importance of following the law. He warned against jungle justice and illegal actions by individuals or groups.
Habib encouraged the public to stay calm. He assured them that the results of the investigation would be shared when ready.
