The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos has discovered a fake pregnancy scheme worth ₦16.17 million. They also made progress in recovering many fake cosmetic products.
On Thursday, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) at the FCID Annex, Simeon Akpanudom, shared this news with reporters. He highlighted the department's work from 30 March to 25 June.
Mr Akpanudom said they are working hard to fight economic crimes, fraud, human trafficking, and attacks on important national facilities.
One significant case they are looking into involves claims of stealing money by false pretenses, cheating, conspiracy, and illegal abortion.
According to him, this case started from a complaint by a man. He accused his fiancée, a 22-year-old woman, of pretending to be pregnant. She took money from him for antenatal care, medical treatment, and other pregnancy costs.
"The total amount taken from the complainant is ₦16.17 million."
Mr Akpanudom said investigations showed that the pregnancy was reportedly ended at around five months at a private clinic in Ajah, Lagos.
The AIG mentioned that the suspect and a nurse from the clinic have been sent to Kirikiri Correctional Centre. They are also trying to catch the medical director who was supposedly involved in the abortion.
