A 22-year-old woman, Onyekachi Mmerichukwu, and a nurse are now in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. They are accused of cheating people out of N16.17 million in a pregnancy scam and for illegal abortion in Lagos.

Simeon Akpanudom, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos, shared this news with reporters on Thursday.

He said the investigation started after Mr. Olajide reported the case. He claimed Mmerichukwu, who is his fiancée, tricked him into thinking she was pregnant. She took large amounts of money from him for pregnancy-related costs.

Akpanudom explained that the suspect allegedly collected N16,170,000 from the complainant. She did this while pretending to need antenatal care, medical treatment, and other expenses related to the fake pregnancy.

He said, “The petitioner alleged that the suspect falsely represented to him that she was pregnant and subsequently obtained various sums of money from him under the guise of antenatal care, medical treatment, and other pregnancy-related expenses.

“The total amount allegedly obtained during the period under review is 16,170,000.00. Discreet investigation led to the arrest of the accused person and a nurse attached to a private medical facility.”

Further findings showed that the pregnancy was later ended at a hospital in the Ajah area of Lagos.

Akpanudom added that this procedure was done for personal reasons, not for medical reasons. He also mentioned that they are working to arrest the medical director of the hospital for his role in the abortion.

“The two suspects have been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre while the investigation is ongoing to arrest the medical director of the suspect hospital, who admittedly procured the illegal abortion in conjunction with the nurse,” he said.
