The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has warned the public to ignore fake offers claiming to sell forfeited vehicles at low prices.
The agency issued a statement on Friday in Abuja. Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy, said criminals are pretending to be senior officials of the agency.
Babafemi stated that these fraudsters are using the names of top NDLEA officials, especially the Secretary, Mr Shadrach Haruna. They are sending out fake letters and messages about vehicles supposedly forfeited to the agency for auction.
He called these offers a total scam. He said they are a malicious trick to steal money from unsuspecting people.
Babafemi stressed that no NDLEA official has the power to privately offer, allocate, or sell forfeited vehicles or any other assets taken by the agency.
"All vehicles and assets seized as proceeds of drug-related crimes are sold only through public auctions. These auctions are done by approved auctioneers registered with the government," he said.
He added that any real auction by the agency would be widely announced in national newspapers.
It will also be shared through the NDLEA’s official channels to follow legal rules and public procurement guidelines.
Babafemi urged everyone to ignore and report any private letters, text messages, or social media posts claiming to come from Haruna or any NDLEA official offering forfeited vehicles or other assets for sale.
"The public should know that these offers are a complete scam.
The agency wants to clearly say that these fraudulent offers are just a trick to steal money from people," he said.
The NDLEA spokesman reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to being open and honest in all its work. He advised the public not to fall for the fraudsters' tricks.
He encouraged anyone approached with such fake offers to report it immediately to the nearest NDLEA command or through the agency's official communication channels.
