The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is sounding the alarm about cracks found at the Kangimi Dam in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The agency said that a serious failure of the dam could endanger communities downstream in Kaduna and Niger states, as well as in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

NSEMA's director-general, Abdullahi Arah, shared his worries in a statement. He called for an immediate technical inspection of the dam and quick preventive actions.

Arah noted that this situation needs urgent attention, especially now during the rainy season when flood risks are increasing across the country.

He warned that if the dam fails, it could suddenly release a lot of water. This could cause fast flooding and serious damage to communities, roads, and other important structures downstream.

NSEMA has asked the federal government, Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and relevant dam authorities to quickly check the cracks.

The agency also wants these authorities to do detailed assessments of flood risks downstream. They should identify communities at risk and important infrastructure and take necessary steps to protect them.

NSEMA called for the setup of good early-warning systems and emergency evacuation plans. They want clear safe locations and routes for evacuation.

The agency highlighted the need for better cooperation between Kaduna, Niger, the FCT, and other areas that might be affected. This will help ensure a united response if things get worse.

NSEMA advised people living in areas that could be at risk to remain calm but stay alert. They should avoid going near rivers and streams, especially when it rains heavily, and listen to information from the right authorities.

The agency also suggested that residents should know safe places and evacuation routes ahead of time just in case.

NSEMA stressed that being prepared is key to protecting lives and property. They urged all relevant authorities to take steps now to prevent any disaster related to the dam.
