A Nigerian man living in the UK, Chibueze Chukwurah, has been taken into custody after another Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin, died in Lewisham High Street, London.

The UK Metropolitan Police shared this information in a statement on Tuesday.

Recall that PUNCH Metro reported that police were called to Lewisham High Street around 4:40 a.m. on May 24 after reports of a fight.

The police said Ekerin later died from his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 30.

The police also mentioned that a suspect, 32-year-old Maxwell Oguanaya, was already in custody over the incident.

On Tuesday, the Met Police provided an update, saying Chukwurah was arrested on Friday in connection with the case.

The statement said, "Second man charged with murder following an assault in Lewisham. A second man has been charged with murder after an assault in Lewisham.

"Chibueze Chukwurah, 34 (14.02.1992), of Royston Road, Glasgow, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday, 5 June.

"He was charged on Sunday, 7 June, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 8 June. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 10 June."

PUNCH Metro reported on Monday that Taiwo’s brother, Kehinde Ekerin, confirmed that Taiwo died after an unprovoked attack during a night out.

In a GoFundMe appeal, Kehinde noted that the family was looking for public help to pay for funeral costs.

“It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we share the passing of our beloved Taiwo Ekerin, who tragically lost his life following an unprovoked attack during a night out.

“Born on 25 December 1984, Ekerin was a much-loved father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a special bond with his twin brother, and his loss has left an unimaginable void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.

“Above all, Taiwo was a devoted father to his daughter, who now faces the future without her dad. He was known for his warmth, kindness, sense of humour, and the love he gave so freely to those around him.

“His life was taken far too soon, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this devastating tragedy,” Kehinde stated.
