Kwara families in despair as kidnappers refuse N155m ransom

Almost six months after many people were taken by gunmen in Kwara State, families of the victims say their hopes of getting them back are fading. This is because the kidnappers have allegedly turned down over N155 million raised by the communities.

The families blame the authorities for not ending the long captivity. They are now worried about the 176 people taken after the kidnappers reportedly issued new threats.

In a heartfelt video shared with PUNCH Metro on Thursday, community leaders explained how residents have used their savings, sold valuables, and collected money to meet the kidnappers' demands. Sadly, their efforts fell through when the kidnappers allegedly rejected the money.

This situation has left hundreds of families in a state of confusion. Many are unsure if their loved ones will ever come back home.

Abdul Ibrahim, speaking for the affected communities, said things have gotten worse. He mentioned that the kidnappers have threatened to kill some of the captives and keep others as wives.

He said that the communities have tried every possible option, including protests and direct talks, but none have worked to free even one person.

"We contributed more than N155 million because we believed it would bring our people home. Instead, the money was rejected and the suffering has continued," Ibrahim stated.

"Our appeal now is to the Federal Government, the Kwara State Government, and the security agencies. We have reached the point where only a strong government action can save these people."

Ibrahim also claimed the kidnappers had warned that some female captives would be forced into marriage. This message has caused even more fear among families.

Suleiman Bukata, the Dan Sardaukin Kaiama, said that the recent rescue of victims in Oyo State has given hope that a similar rescue could happen for those still held by the kidnappers in Kaiama.

Bukata called on security agencies to start a serious operation in the affected areas, pointing out that the victims have been in captivity for too long.

"No Nigerian community should face this kind of tragedy alone. If people could be rescued elsewhere, our people should not be forgotten," he added.

It is important to remember that the victims were taken on February 3 when armed men attacked Woro and nearby Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, resulting in many deaths.
