The Oyo State Government has warned people and groups to avoid blocking roads, fighting, and any actions that could disturb the peace during the 2026 Egungun Festival in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
Wasiu Olatubosun, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, shared this message in a statement on Monday in Ibadan. He said the government is serious about keeping law and order during the festival.
"Reports show that some people have been using the festival to block roads and stop residents and drivers from moving freely," the commissioner said. He called these actions illegal and not acceptable.
Olatubosun asked all participants and supporters to celebrate in a responsible way. He noted that while people have the right to enjoy their cultural and religious festivals, these celebrations should not violate the rights of others or create a public nuisance.
The commissioner also reminded everyone that it is against the law to carry, show, or use weapons and other dangerous items during the festival. He warned that anyone who threatens public safety will be arrested and taken to court.
He also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to enforce the law strictly and deal with those who break it.
Olatubosun wished all Egungun worshippers a peaceful and successful celebration. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to keeping lives and properties safe. He stressed that violence, fighting, revenge, and any behavior that disrupts public peace will not be accepted.
