The Oyo State Fire Services put out a fire that started from a mobile phone battery explosion at Tecno Complex, Mokola Roundabout, in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

A statement on Tuesday from the state’s Fire Services Chairman, Moroof Akinwande, said the incident happened on Monday, June 8, at 8:15 PM.

Akinwande said fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo quickly responded after receiving a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju. He reported that a shop was on fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

He added that the firefighters acted fast to contain and put out the fire, stopping it from spreading to nearby shops and properties.

Preliminary investigations showed that the fire started from the explosion of a mobile phone battery. This ignited some nearby materials that could catch fire.

“At exactly 8:15 PM on Monday, June 8, 2026, the Oyo State Fire Services received a distress call from Mr Oluyomade Adepeju about a shop fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

“Fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo quickly moved to the scene. When they arrived, they found that the second shop on the upper floor of the building was on fire, with thick smoke coming out from it.

“The firefighters worked fast to contain and put out the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops and properties.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was caused by a mobile phone battery explosion, which ignited nearby materials.

“No one was hurt in the incident. The firefighting team returned to the station safely at 10:58 PM and continued to be on standby for any emergencies,” Akinwande said.

The Fire Services Chairman praised the officers from the Nigerian Police Force, Mokola Divisional Headquarters, for providing security during the operation.

He urged the public to follow safety measures when using electrical and electronic devices to avoid explosions that could lead to fire outbreaks.

Akinwande also stressed the need to have fire extinguishers in all commercial buildings. This helps in quickly responding to fire incidents at their early stages.
