A fire broke out on Sunday morning in a residential building in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. The fire affected a store and a room in the building.

The incident happened around 7:10 am at No. 5 Obafemi Akere Street, off Basin Road, Ilorin. This led to a quick response from the Kwara State Fire Service.

Hassan Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Fire Service, shared the news in a statement available to The PUNCH in Ilorin.

He said the affected building was a five-bedroom bungalow. The fire damaged a store and a room at the back of the house.

"Through their quick and professional response, the size of the fire was greatly reduced, preventing it from taking over the whole building and causing more damage," he said.

Adekunle added that early investigations showed the fire started from a generator that was running while the occupants were unaware.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire originated from a running generator set, which caught fire without the knowledge of the occupants. The flames subsequently spread to a nearby store and a room located at the rear of the building," he stated.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, warned residents to be careful when using generators.

He emphasized the importance of keeping generators in well-ventilated and isolated areas, away from flammable materials and homes. He also advised regular maintenance and not leaving generators unattended for long periods.
