Police have arrested four people for trying to extort ₦30 million from a resident in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The suspects are Muhammad Shafiu, 21, Mansur Ibrahim, 21, Aliyu Umar, 25, and Muhammad Suleiman, 23.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson in Kebbi, Bashir Usman, the arrests came after the victim, Aminu Garba, filed a complaint.
Mr Garba said he received several anonymous and threatening phone calls demanding ₦30 million from him or he would be kidnapped.
"Investigation revealed that the first, second, and third suspects bought a new SIM card and called the victim many times.
"One of them changed his voice to sound like a Fulani man to scare the victim and hide his identity," Mr Usman explained.
Later investigations revealed that the fourth suspect, Muhammad Suleiman, was a family friend of the victim.
Mr Suleiman allegedly gave the victim’s phone number and private family information to the group to help with the extortion and threats.
The police located and arrested the suspects in Gumbin Kure and Gamjeji villages in Maiyama Local Government Area.
After the arrests, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, ordered a complete investigation into the case.
He assured the public that the suspects would face the law fully.
Mr Hadejia also stressed the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Kebbi State.
