The Lagos State Police has arrested six people after a video showing young men bothering drivers in the state went viral on social media.
In a statement on its official X account on Thursday, the police said it was aware of the footage showing "some miscreants harassing motorists and creating distress along the road."
The video, posted on Wednesday by user @MrMekzy, shows several young men surrounding a private car in traffic. They made aggressive gestures towards the driver, waved objects, and pressed against the car, almost breaking the side mirror.
The poster commented, "This is not even a celebrity, this is a normal person going about his day and they almost destroyed his side mirror. How are you people coping with this in Lagos? Why isn’t anyone doing anything about it?"
The police explained that they had been watching and taking steps against such actions before the video gained attention.
"Following the incident, six suspects have been arrested on the same road, and investigation is ongoing."
"Officers have also been strategically deployed to intensify surveillance and prevent a recurrence," the statement added.
The police thanked the public for bringing this issue to light and encouraged residents to keep sharing timely and credible information to help keep Lagos safe.
This news comes as many people complain about the actions of street touts, commonly called agberos.
In recent months, personalities like actress Bimbo Ademoye, comedian Brain Jotter, and music video director TG Omori have spoken out against harassment, extortion, and damage to vehicles allegedly caused by street touts and area boys targeting drivers and film crews across the state.
