PRP raises alarm over alleged plot to weaken party before 2027 elections

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) on Thursday cried out about a supposed plan to disrupt its ranks, hurt its chances in elections, and damage efforts to form a strong opposition coalition for the 2027 general elections.

The party accused some former members and current officials of trying to create divisions within the party and ruin its grassroots support.

In a statement from Abuja, PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, claimed that those behind the plan were ready to spend hundreds of millions of naira to sway party members and form a faction within the party.

However, the party did not mention any names or provide proof for these allegations in the statement.

Baba-Ahmed urged party members and the public to resist what he called attempts to undermine the PRP. He pointed out the alleged recruitment of polling agents by individuals without permission to do so.

He said, "In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted. Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The PRP chairman also warned current party officials involved in this alleged scheme that they would face disciplinary action.

"The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a faction with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed assured the party’s candidates and supporters that the leadership would not give in on their loyalty and commitment. He insisted that the PRP is ready to challenge the current administration beyond 2027.

He said the party would keep taking part in efforts to build an opposition coalition strong enough to challenge the ruling party in the next general election.

These allegations come at a time when political shifts are happening and opposition parties are working to form alliances for the 2027 elections. The strength and unity of these opposition groups will likely influence the outcome of the elections.
