Troops from Sector 9, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have rescued eight people who were kidnapped from Pandam Forest in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The rescue was confirmed on Friday in a statement by Captain Chinonso Oteh, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force for Operation ENDURING PEACE.
According to the statement, the operation happened around 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24. This followed reliable information about the kidnappers hiding in the forest.
Oteh said soldiers stationed in Namu Town carried out a focused offensive operation that led to the successful rescue of the victims.
He mentioned that the troops fought with the suspected kidnappers during the operation.
"During the operation, troops engaged in a firefight with the suspected kidnappers, who fired sporadically in an attempt to withdraw. Taking advantage of the confusion, three of the kidnapped victims managed to escape earlier from the kidnappers’ custody," he said.
Oteh also noted that a follow-up search of the forest led to the rescue of five more victims.
"Subsequent thorough combing of the forest by the troops led to the rescue of an additional five abducted victims, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to eight.
The rescued victims are currently in safe condition, and efforts are ongoing to reunite them with their families," he added.
The military said that local community members praised the operation and promised to keep working with security agencies.
The statement mentioned, "This successful operation has received high praise from local communities, who expressed readiness to continue sharing useful information to help catch the kidnappers.
Troops are currently chasing the fleeing kidnappers to catch or neutralize them. Operation ENDURING PEACE thanks the citizens for their cooperation and calls for more support to disrupt criminal activities and restore peace in the Joint Operations Area.
