Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, says the result of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State shows that the All Progressives Congress and federal power can be beaten in the 2027 general elections.
Wabara congratulated Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory. He called the result “a powerful demonstration that no amount of political mobilization, intimidation or deployment of federal power can permanently subdue the will of a determined electorate.”
He praised the people of Osun State for sticking with their chosen candidate despite what he called “the enormous political machinery” set up by the APC-led Federal Government to take power from the current governor.
“Osun people have written their names in gold in the history of Nigerian democracy. They showed great courage and strength by refusing to be intimidated or rushed into giving up their democratic rights.
“They stood firm against intimidation, threats, and the heavy presence of those who thought federal power made them untouchable. The people have reminded us that in a democracy, power ultimately belongs to the people,” he said.
Wabara said the message from the Osun election is that political power truly rests with the voters.
“The message from Osun is clear: power belongs to the people, not to any government, political party or individual. When citizens stand together for what they believe in and protect their votes, no amount of federal might can force an unpopular candidate on them,” Wabara said.
He called the Osun result a wake-up call for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged citizens across the country to follow the example of Osun voters by voting in large numbers and staying at polling units and collation centers to protect their votes.
“If Nigerians come out in their millions in 2027, vote with their conscience, and stay at their polling units and collation centers to guard their ballots, no one will be able to cheat in the election,” he said.
Wabara also urged opposition parties to come together behind one presidential candidate to boost their chances against the ruling APC in the 2027 presidential election.
But he warned that the Osun governorship election should not be seen as a guarantee of opposition victory in 2027. He described the APC as a party with skilled political strategists.
He cautioned that the Osun election could be a “smokescreen to validate APC victory in 2027,” arguing that “the APC is full of master strategists.”
Wabara also congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission for quickly uploading polling unit results on its Result Viewing Portal, IReV.
He said this move helped transparency and allowed Nigerians to follow the collation process with more confidence.
