10 Years of Oba Ewuare II: A Celebration of Benin Heritage
This article celebrates a decade of Oba Ewuare II's leadership while addressing the threats to the Benin monarchy from both within and outside the community.
For many years, the Kingdom of Benin has been a shining example of African culture, governance, and art. At the heart of this rich history is the Oba of Benin. He is not just a traditional leader but also the spiritual guide and protector of the Edo people.
The Benin Monarchy has faced threats from various empires, colonial forces, and the loss of sacred artifacts. Recently, the Obaseki administration has tried to weaken the monarchy's role in today's governance. But now, a new and painful challenge is emerging, not from outside but from some of our own people. Certain Benin and Edo citizens living abroad are starting to attack the monarchy.
A troubling trend is spreading on social media. There is a wave of insults and attacks aimed at the Oba’s position. These individuals, hidden behind their screens and backed by unhappy political interests, are using social media to attack a throne that our ancestors defended fiercely.
This is not just harmless chat or political debate. This is an attack on our identity, culture, and heritage. It hurts when people from our own land, who enjoy life in Europe and the West, insult the Oba of Benin. This behavior is a form of cyberbullying and a disrespect to the entire Edo nation and our traditional institution.
The United Nations General Assembly has passed Resolution 79/243 against Cybercrimes. This resolution aims to improve cooperation among countries to fight crimes committed through technology. It will help countries share evidence of serious crimes online. The treaty will remain open for signatures until December 31, 2026. We hope more countries will join soon.
As Edo people, especially Benins, we must act against those using social media to attack our Oba. We will face this challenge just as our ancestors faced past threats to our kingdom.
The absurdity of these attacks was highlighted during the 10th Coronation Anniversary of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, Commander of the Federal Republic. While a small group of critics vented online, many gathered in Benin City to celebrate. They enjoyed royal displays, discussions in honor of Oba Erediauwa, and a grand royal Durbar. Leaders from all levels praised the Oba’s position, showing his importance.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the Oba, calling him “an enduring symbol of cultural heritage, dignity, and integrity.” Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and other leaders also expressed support for the Benin Royal Stool. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Learned Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, spoke about the Oba’s role in promoting peace and cultural identity.
Various social and cultural groups joined in praising what many see as the most respected Monarch in Sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Evbaziegbere Isibor, President of the Benin Club 1933, said, “We celebrate your reign of peace, unity, and progress, which continues to inspire hope.” The Benin Consultative Forum, through its Acting President, Samson Osagie, noted: “the reign of His Royal Majesty has brought positive changes that enhance respect for the Kingdom.”
The energy and excitement of the 10th Coronation Anniversary have confirmed that the Oba’s influence goes beyond local boundaries. It is a significant institution recognized worldwide.
It is sad that while the President of Nigeria, state governors, and international guests show respect for our heritage, some Edo people abroad try to disrespect the monarchy. By mocking the Oba, they are attacking our pride from within.
We cannot sit back and let this happen.
Freedom of speech and living abroad should not allow anyone to insult our age-old monarchy.
As the saying goes: "Aisagbonrioba, Erinmwin Na Ke riore."
Edo people at home and abroad must unite to defend the throne.
While some have stepped up to defend our monarch, silence from the rest could invite more disrespect to our culture.
We must tell those abroad that the Oba of Benin is a line that should not be crossed.
Digital platforms should not be used to harm our culture. They should not be a space for personal or political attacks against our history.
The strength of the Edo people lies in our unity and loyalty to the Oba, just as the British remain loyal to their monarchy.
The success of the 10th Coronation Anniversary showed that the bond between the Oba and his people is strong.
Now, more than ever, the Edo community worldwide must work to maintain the pride of the Benin Monarchy. Most Edo people abroad value their culture and must speak out against harmful voices and protect our heritage.
The Oba of Benin is a lasting symbol of African dignity and a link to our past. The world may change, but the honor of the Benin Kingdom remains. To those who disrespect from afar, know this: the Edo people will protect their king and will fight against any attempt to tarnish the glory of Benin.
Oba gha t’o kpere, Ise!
