The Commissioner of Police for the Osun governorship election, Samuel Etaifo, has announced that 15,000 police officers will be on duty for the election on 15 August.
Mr Etaifo shared this information at a news conference in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, on Wednesday.
He mentioned that a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), who will oversee election operations, are also expected to be in the state.
He explained that he was sent to Osun State two weeks before the election because he is the most junior among the senior officers assigned to supervise the election.
Mr Etaifo disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, visited the state weeks ago to look into the security situation. He noted the political tension in the area.
According to Mr Etaifo, Mr Disu then ordered his deployment to the state to help reduce the tension and get ready for a peaceful election.
"He sent 16 units of the Mobile Police Force and gave us the mandate to maintain peace and calm before the election."
"We are to clear and prepare the ground for a peaceful, tension-free and successful election."
He added, "We are also to assure the people of the state of their security and boost their confidence in the ability of the police ahead of the election."
The Commissioner of Police also warned that anyone who breaks the electoral law, no matter their status or political party, will be arrested and taken to Abuja for prosecution.
He is confident that the security measures put in place for the election, along with efforts made in recent months, will lead to a successful poll.
Mr Etaifo called on residents, political parties, and other stakeholders to work together with security agencies to ensure a peaceful election.
