The National Association of Persons With Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD), Abia Chapter, has asked the management of Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal to hire qualified members for different roles.
This request was made on Monday during a visit by the associationās leaders to the bus terminal in Umuahia.
While speaking, NAPWPD Chairman in Abia, Iroabuchi Alozie, thanked the state government for building the terminal and launching the Abia Green Shuttle Buses.
He called the transport project a sign of Abiaās new focus on development, orderliness, efficiency, and excellence under the current government.
Mr Alozie noted that many members have the education, skills, and integrity needed to do well in various jobs at the terminal.
He mentioned jobs like ticketing officers, clerical officers, route departure officers, customer service staff, administrative assistants, ICT staff, and other suitable roles.
āOur request is not just out of sympathy but based on the law,ā Mr Alozie said.
He pointed out that the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, and the Abia State Disability Law ensure equal job opportunities and public involvement.
āWe urge the management to turn these legal provisions into real actions,ā he added.
He said hiring qualified persons with disabilities will show Governor Alex Ottiās commitment to inclusive governance and equal chances for all.
Mr Alozie also expressed concern about an alleged case where a member was harassed by a Green Shuttle Bus driver at Bata Junction, Aba.
He called on transport operators and the public to respect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, as guaranteed by federal and state laws.
In response, the terminalās General Manager, Ifeanyi Chima, apologized for the reported incident involving the bus driver.
Mr Chima, represented by the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Manager, John Thompson, promised that the issue would be fully investigated.
He stated that any operator found guilty after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary actions.
According to Mr Chima, the Otti administration prioritizes inclusion, accessibility, and equal treatment for persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups.
He mentioned that special facilities have been set up for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, pregnant women, and nursing mothers at the terminal.
Mr Chima revealed that a reserved area has been created in the departure lounge specifically for passengers with special needs.
āWe have instructed that any person with special needs who buys a ticket must board first,ā he said.
He added that bus operators are receiving ongoing training on the governmentās policy of dignity, inclusion, and orderly service.
āAny operator who doesnāt comply will not be allowed to operate from this terminal,ā Mr Chima warned.
He also mentioned that management has set up a system to address complaints from passengers using the bus terminal.
Mr Chima encouraged passengers to report any cases of discrimination, providing details like bus registration numbers and ticket info, to aid quick investigation and action.
He confirmed managementās commitment to working with NAPWPD and other groups to ensure the terminal is accessible and inclusive for everyone.
āYou and I are on the same page on this, and I see areas where you can work effectively.
āI will write a memo to highlight your request,ā Mr Chima assured the associationās leaders.
The NAPWPD team promised to continue supporting the development programs of the Otti government and policies that promote inclusion, accessibility, and good governance in Abia.
