Accord Party Calls on EU and ECOWAS to Address Violence Before Osun Election

The Accord Party has reached out to the European Union and ECOWAS. They want these organizations to step in and help reduce the rising political tension before Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

Maxwell Mgbudem, the National Chairman of Accord, shared the party's concerns on Wednesday in Abuja. He revealed that they sent a letter on August 12 to both the EU delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, highlighting the growing political tension in Osun ahead of the upcoming election.

Mgbudem called the election a critical test for Nigeria’s democracy. He said it is also important for the 2027 general election. He noted with worry the intimidation and violence facing their party members, saying this could endanger the election’s credibility.

The letter referenced data showing that the political climate has become very dangerous, with at least 29 deaths and many injuries from gunfire reported. Mgbudem said, "The situation has been further inflamed by the detention of more than 60 Accord members and supporters across Abuja and Nasarawa State, alongside threats of violence from prominent political figures."

He also mentioned a disturbing video where a sitting Senator allegedly called for Accord members to be killed wherever they are found. Mgbudem expressed concern about the fair use of federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

He pointed out the freezing of Osun government bank accounts by the EFCC. This action was later reversed after public outcry and intervention from the presidency. While he said the party respects the work of anti-corruption and law enforcement bodies, he warned against what he called "the weaponisation of state power."

Mgbudem added, "Our concern, therefore, is not to obstruct any lawful investigation or enforcement action, but to ensure that legitimate state powers are not deployed in a manner to intimidate political opponents, restrict lawful political participation or create an uneven electoral playing field."

He asked the EU to use its diplomatic power to promote political neutrality among security agencies. He also called for independent oversight by INEC and a secure setting for a free, fair, and transparent election for everyone.

Mgbudem clarified, "We are not asking the EU to take sides in the political contest or to endorse any political party or candidate. Our appeal is for the protection of democratic principles, the rule of law, political pluralism and the fundamental right of the people of Osun to freely choose their leaders."

He insisted that the election must accurately reflect the will of the people of Osun.
