ADC leader asks Wike to speak to Kuje council chair over his comments

A leader of the African Democratic Congress, Okai Austin, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to speak to the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Samuel Shekwolo, about his comments. Okai said these remarks are divisive and could increase political tensions in the area.

Okai, who is also a human rights activist, made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja. This came after a video went viral in which the council chairman was reportedly heard threatening to track down and attack critics on social media.

Shekwolo also reportedly warned residents who do not support the ruling APC to leave Kuje Area Council. Responding to these comments, Okai called them “uncalled for” and dangerous. He warned that such statements could lead to violence if not addressed quickly by the right authorities.

“The Federal Capital Territory is home to all Nigerians and the international community. We must not let anyone increase tensions,” Okai said. He urged the council chairman to show restraint and promote peace, tolerance, and inclusiveness among residents, no matter their political views.

Okai emphasized that public officials, especially those in local leadership, should be careful with their words. They need to avoid making statements that could divide their communities. “Being a local government chairman does not mean one should lack administrative civility. Kuje is known for peace and tolerance, and the leadership must reflect that,” he stated.

The ADC leader also called on the relevant authorities to look into Shekwolo's comments. He insisted that elected and appointed officials should work hard to maintain peace and order. He stressed that political differences should not disturb peaceful coexistence among residents of the FCT.

Okai urged Shekwolo to take cues from political leaders who are known for peaceful engagement. He mentioned former FCT Senator Philip Aduda as a good example. He appealed to Wike and other authorities to intervene before the situation worsens. Responsible leadership requires restraint, tolerance, and respect for different political views.
