Adebutu and Showunmi Praise Adeleke for His Victory in Osun

The 2027 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, and party chieftain, Segun Showunmi, have congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election. They see this result as a win for democracy and the people of Osun State.

Adebutu issued a statement on Sunday through his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya. He praised Adeleke for what he called steadfastness and governance that focuses on the people. He noted that Adeleke managed to secure the mandate given to him freely by the people of Osun State.

Adebutu pointed out that Adeleke’s victory shows that the will of the voters will always triumph over political tricks. He said, “I heartily congratulate my brother, Governor Ademola Adeleke, for proving that when the people stand firmly behind a leader, no force can subvert their will. His strides in Osun are a testament to what the people really need, good governance and genuine empathy for the masses.”

Adebutu also stated that the APC in Ogun State is losing its hold on the voters as the 2027 governorship election approaches. He mentioned that the people of Ogun are becoming more unhappy with the APC government and will reject the party at the polls.

Growing Democratic Culture

Showunmi, in a separate statement, said the election results show that democratic culture is maturing in the South-West. He remarked that the election revealed that the Yoruba voters have little patience for what they see as bullying or misuse of political power.

Showunmi noted that voters are more willing to support those seen as underdogs and are ready to voice their discontent through voting when they feel a party is being unfairly pressured. He added that the election highlights how important a governor's performance and popularity are in these elections.

He mentioned that while federal influence is still important, it cannot replace the goodwill that a governor earns through good performance, being accessible, and having a positive image. Showunmi also pointed out that voters are becoming more independent in their choices. He argued that political endorsements alone can no longer ensure victory at the polls.

He said, “The era when political endorsements alone guaranteed electoral outcomes appears to be fading. Citizens are increasingly exercising their judgment and voting according to their convictions.”

The PDP chieftain warned political parties and their leaders to not ignore their stakeholders. He explained that having party structures does not automatically mean that they will get strong support during elections. He warned that party members who do not involve stakeholders might find that those they have neglected do not want to support them during elections.
