The Imole Campaign Council, which is backing Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has shown support for President Bola Tinubu’s call for police and security agencies to act fairly during Saturday’s governorship election.
The council believes the President's call is important for protecting voters and keeping the election process credible.
In a statement released on Friday in Osogbo, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the council’s spokesman, urged the Nigeria Police Force to follow the directive closely and perform their duties without bias.
“The Imole Campaign Council welcomes the statement by President Bola Tinubu calling on the police and other security agencies to be neutral and professional in Saturday’s governorship election,” Olajengbesi said.
He pointed out that the President instructed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other security leaders to ensure maximum security at polling units and protect voters.
“The President’s directive to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other heads of security outfits participating in the election to provide maximum security at polling units and protect voters needs to be stressed,” he said.
The campaign council also welcomed the President’s request for the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold a transparent, free, and fair election.
However, they expressed worries about what they see as the police’s lack of fair practice in recent months. They urged the police to ensure that their personnel remain impartial during the election.
“The Imole Campaign Council calls on the police to obey the presidential order and discharge their duties dispassionately on Saturday,” the statement said.
The council also called on National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to ensure that the police follow the President's directive.
“Voters must be protected. Polling units must be guarded. Troublemakers must be arrested regardless of party affiliation. Ultimately, votes must count,” it stated.
The council urged security agencies to stop intimidation and make sure that all eligible voters can freely cast their votes.
They also appealed to the people of Osun State to come out and vote for their chosen candidates.
