The Anambra State Police Command has explained why it is taking cars with tinted windows off the roads. This includes vehicles with tinted glass permits. They say the action is not meant to disturb drivers unnecessarily.
This operation started recently across the state. It has affected both vehicles with permits and those without. Many drivers are worried as this slows down traffic.
In a statement on Sunday, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the impounding of tinted vehicles is part of a security operation. The goal is to tackle rising insecurity and stop criminals from using these vehicles.
Ikenga added that the operation aims to check the validity of tinted glass permits. They want to spot fake or wrongly obtained permits and ensure everything is done correctly.
While they regret any trouble this may cause, Ikenga emphasized that the operation is also about making sure vehicles are properly registered and have valid number plates. This is to prevent criminals from using these issues to hide and commit crimes.
The statement said, "The Anambra State Police Command wishes to clarify that the ongoing impounding of vehicles with tinted glasses, whether or not the owners present tinted glass permits, as well as unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed, covered, or defaced number plates, is part of a security-driven enforcement exercise."
The statement continued, "The exercise is aimed at verifying the authenticity of tinted glass permits, identifying forged or fraudulently obtained permits, ensuring due process, enforcing compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, and preventing criminal elements from exploiting such violations to evade identification and perpetrate crime."
Ikenga stated, "While the Command regrets the inconvenience this may cause to law-abiding residents, the exercise has become necessary in view of prevailing security concerns and the increasing use of such vehicles by criminals to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts."
Finally, the Command asked Ndi Anambra for their understanding and cooperation. They assured everyone that this action is in the interest of keeping lives safe and protecting property across the state.
