APGA and YPP Clash Over EFCC Chairman's Resignation Calls

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) are not on the same page about calls for the resignation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede. This disagreement comes after the freezing of an Osun State Government account ahead of the governorship election on August 15.

APGA believes that President Bola Tinubu’s order for the EFCC to reverse its action is enough to solve the issue. On the other hand, the YPP is worried that this event raises big questions about the EFCC’s independence and how it operates.

The trouble started when the EFCC decided to restrict an official Osun State Government account. This was part of an investigation into the alleged diversion and laundering of around ₦11 billion linked to Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds, and Federal Allocation receipts.

The EFCC said that its investigation started before the election and was not connected to politics. Still, many opposition parties, civil society groups, and legal experts criticized the timing. They warned that it might look like the federal government is interfering in the election.

In response to the backlash, Tinubu told the EFCC to go back to court and lift the freeze on the account. He said no federal agency should make it seem like it is trying to influence the Osun governorship election.

APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, talked about the issue. He said the president’s action dealt with the problem. "He (Olukoyede) should be called to order and has been called to order. That for us is sufficient," Opara said in a WhatsApp message on Thursday.

But the YPP disagrees. Its National Publicity Secretary, Wale Egbeola-Martins, said the president’s instruction raises serious concerns about the EFCC’s independence. He pointed out that if the EFCC could freeze a state’s account only for the president to later say it should be unfrozen, it shows the action might not be based on the EFCC’s own judgment.

"The president’s directive ordering the EFCC to unfreeze the Osun State Government accounts raises serious questions about the Commission’s operational independence," Egbeola-Martins said in a WhatsApp message on Thursday.

He added that if the EFCC Chairman acted beyond the Commission’s powers or allowed outside influence, he should take responsibility. "From the YPP’s perspective, this development highlights the need for accountability within the EFCC. If the Chairman acted beyond the powers conferred on him or allowed the Commission to be used in a manner inconsistent with its statutory mandate, then he should take responsibility, including considering resignation."

Egbeola-Martins said the EFCC must follow the law closely and avoid political influence if it wants to keep the public's trust.

The argument over the Osun State account has heated up political discussions ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Opposition parties are accusing the Federal Government of using state agencies to sway the election process, a claim the EFCC has continually rejected.

The EFCC has insisted that its actions are strictly based on its legal duty to investigate financial crimes. They also said the investigation into the Osun State Government began months before the election.

While directing the EFCC to return to court, Tinubu affirmed his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption agencies. He stressed that no action should damage public trust in the fairness and credibility of the upcoming election.
