Atiku Hosts UK High Commissioner for Talks

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with the UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, on Thursday. The meeting also included senior British diplomatic officials to discuss current issues in Nigeria.

Atiku's aide, Kenneth Okonkwo, shared details of the meeting on his X account. He mentioned that Atiku met with Montgomery, Lucy Green, who heads the Political Section, and Thomas Simpson, the Second Secretary Political.

Okonkwo noted that the talks centered on current affairs in Nigeria. He did not provide more details about the meeting or its location.

Photos and videos from the meeting show Atiku in traditional attire. He was seen greeting and shaking hands with the diplomats in a formal setting decorated with Nigerian flags.

The meeting comes as the British High Commission continues its discussions with Nigerian political leaders and electoral officials in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement from April 2026 on its X account, the UK High Commission said Montgomery and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever had met with political leaders and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Commission mentioned it looks forward to collaborating with all political parties to ensure "inclusive & credible elections."

The officials also visited Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu and 2023 presidential candidates Atiku and Peter Obi, as well as INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan.

These visits focused on the state of Nigeria’s political and democratic processes.
