Bajallabe community in Kano exposes drug traffickers, rejects bribe

A state agency has praised residents of Bajallabe community in Kano after they turned down a ₦10 million bribe. They also exposed a suspected drug trafficking network in their area.

The spokesperson for the state’s Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, Lamara Garba, said this happened on Tuesday. Community members saw a Volkswagen Golf loaded with what looked like illegal substances, along with a motorcycle, close to a house.

The residents got suspicious about what the vehicle was carrying. They approached the driver for an explanation. To avoid being caught, Garba said the suspect offered ₦10 million to community leaders and local vigilantes.

But the residents quickly refused the money. They insisted on reporting the matter to the right authorities.

“To avoid possible violence as tension grew at the scene, the local vigilante chairman informed both the task force and the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division. The police arrived quickly, secured the vehicle and motorcycle, and arrested the suspects for questioning.

Muhyi Magaji, the Chairman of the Multi-Agency Task Force, confirmed the situation. He praised the residents and vigilantes for their honesty and sense of duty.

“Their refusal to accept a huge bribe shows that communities are important in fighting drug trafficking,” Magaji said.

He mentioned that, following a new Executive Order signed by Governor Abba Yusuf, the place where the drugs were found will be sealed until further notice.

The agency has sent samples of the seized items to a forensic lab to find out what they really are.

The Kano State Government set up the Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances. This group includes security agencies, regulatory bodies, and civil society organizations.

The task force is responsible for stopping, raiding, and breaking down major drug distribution centers, warehouses, and markets in all 44 local government areas of Kano State.

They also have to enforce strict anti-drug laws, which include immediately sealing up properties used for storing, packaging, or selling illegal drugs.

The agency is encouraging residents across Kano State to follow the example of Bajallabe community. They should report any suspicious activities to the police instead of taking matters into their own hands.
