Bauchi NDC Governorship Candidate Steps Down, May Move to APC

Ibrahim Kashim, the governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bauchi State, has resigned from the party.

Mr Kashim, who was the Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, officially announced his resignation in a statement dated 16 October.

In the statement, he said his decision came after careful thought.

But he noted that leaving the NDC does not change his commitment to fighting for political reform and socio-economic progress in Bauchi State.

"Our conviction remains that our dear state deserves purposeful leadership, a stronger economy, greater opportunities for our youths and women, improved security, and a future in which every citizen can live with dignity and hope," Mr Kashim said.

He assured his supporters that his political movement is still active.

He mentioned that talks are ongoing with stakeholders and groups that share his vision for a peaceful and prosperous Bauchi State.

He urged his supporters to stay calm, strong, and united, and said details about the next steps in his political journey will be shared soon.

Though Mr Kashim has not made his next move public, many believe he might join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Kashim was the Secretary to the State Government under Governor Bala Mohammed, taking on the role in June 2021.

He resigned in December 2024 during a disagreement between Governor Mohammed and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

His resignation, announced by the governor, raised questions about his loyalty to Mr Wike, leading to his exit from the position.

The Bauchi State Chairman of the NDC, Abdullahi Misau, expressed disappointment over Mr Kashim's resignation.

"Honestly, we are not happy with this development. We are deeply disappointed, but since it is beyond our control, we can only pray that it turns out to be in the best interest of all parties involved."

He added, "In politics, everyone seeks what they believe is best for them. Every individual has the right to choose their own path and decide how they want to contribute to society and the nation, while also pursuing their personal interests."

"Under the electoral framework, the governorship candidate and the running mate contest together. Since we have a running mate, it cannot be said that we are no longer in the race," Mr Misau explained.

He said the party would seek legal advice about the implications of the candidate’s resignation, including discussions with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"We will consult our legal team and seek guidance from INEC’s legal counsel on the appropriate steps to take. However, I can assure you that we are still in the race," he added.

Mr Misau also assured party members and supporters that the NDC leadership will keep working to gather support across Bauchi State.
