A physically challenged beggar was killed in a crash involving multiple vehicles at Car Park C on the outbound side of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Head of Media for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, shared this news in a statement on Saturday. He explained that the incident happened in the early morning hours.
The crash involved three vehicles. These were a container-laden Mack truck with the registration number AGL 374 XX, a loaded DAF truck with registration number AKM 476 XB, and a white Toyota bus with registration number AKD 137 YA.
Akinbiyi mentioned that eyewitnesses reported that the Mack truck had brake failure while approaching the turning point. This caused the truck to crash into other vehicles trying to make a turn.
The brake failure also led to the truck hitting the physically challenged beggar, who was in a wheelchair. Akinbiyi said, “According to eyewitness accounts, the MACK truck had a brake failure and hit vehicles negotiating a turning, and a beggar on wheels chair, slicing his body.”
He added that traffic on the outbound Lagos route was heavily affected. TRACE operatives, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and police are on-site managing the situation.
Akinbiyi also noted that efforts were ongoing to remove the vehicles involved in the crash and restore normal traffic flow as of the time of this report.
On Friday, PUNCH Online reported that multiple crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway caused severe traffic jams, leaving many motorists stranded.
One person died in that incident, and two others were injured, according to the FRSC. The crashes happened on both the outbound and inbound lanes of the expressway.
