Biker and Passenger Survive Serious Crash in Oyo

A motorcyclist and his passenger narrowly escaped death on Sunday after their bike was involved in a crash in Oyo State. Both of them suffered different levels of injuries.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Monday that the accident happened around 8:05 PM. The motorcyclist lost control while trying to avoid another vehicle, which led to the crash.

An eyewitness, Jamiu Akintayo, shared with PUNCH Metro that a car slowed down to go over the speed bumps near Cele Bus Stop. At that moment, two vehicles overtook it from both sides.

"We were coming from Shaki and reached Mokola Road in Ibadan. There are speed bumps on that road near Cele Bus Stop, so our driver and others slowed down to manage them.

"While we were doing that, two vehicles overtook us. One came from the left, and the black car that caused the accident came from the right.

"After we passed the junction a bit, a Toyota Highlander was coming out from the junction. The black car was speeding and tried to avoid hitting the Highlander but ended up crashing into the okada rider and his female passenger.

"The accident was very serious. The motorcyclist had a badly broken leg and was bleeding heavily. The female passenger also had a serious leg injury and was lying unconscious on the ground," he explained.

Akintayo also mentioned that policemen at a nearby checkpoint got to the scene after they heard about the crash. They took the injured victims to a hospital.

"Before the police arrived, the driver of the car ran away, leaving the vehicle in the middle of the road. There were three people in the car, including the driver, and all of them took off. I could not tell if they were hurt because they had already escaped.

"The injuries of the okada rider and his passenger were very serious, and I worry they may not make it," he added.

When PUNCH Metro reached out to the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, she said she could not confirm the incident right away. She said she could not verify who the caller was or what specific accident was being discussed.

"I do not know you, and I would prefer to talk to someone I can trust," the police spokesperson said.

She also added, "Additionally, I do not know the particular incident you are asking about."

As of the time of this report, the identities and conditions of the injured victims had not been confirmed. The police had not released an official statement regarding the crash.
