Breaking: Emir passes away after 46 years of leadership

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Ahmed Muhammad-Sani, has died at 85 after leading for 46 years.

An official statement said he passed away on Thursday afternoon in a hospital in Egypt.

His death comes just four days after the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Bello Suleiman, died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau.

Early Life and Education

The late Emir started his education at Gumel Primary School from 1948 to 1953. He then went to Hadejia Middle School from 1953 to 1956. He finished his secondary education at Rumfa College, which was then known as Kano High School, in 1961.

He furthered his education at the Institute of Administration in Zaria, now part of Ahmadu Bello University. He got a Diploma in Public Administration in 1963 and a Higher Diploma in 1970.

Later, he attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a postgraduate degree in International Relations between 1972 and 1978.

Mr Muhammad-Sani started his career with the Gumel Native Authority from 1961 to 1963. In 1964, he joined the Nigeria Immigration Service and worked in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State.

He moved to public administration in 1972 and served as a senior government official at the Kazaure Divisional Office.

Becoming Emir

His political career changed after the death of his father, who was the Emir of Gumel, on December 13, 1980.

Just three days later, on December 16, 1980, Mr Muhammad-Sani was chosen to take over from his father. He officially became the Emir of Gumel in the old Kano State.
