Building Falls in Anambra, No Casualties Reported

A two-storey residential building has collapsed in Anambra, but thankfully, no one was hurt.

Chijioke Ojukwu, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development in the state, confirmed this to reporters on Monday.

Mr Ojukwu said the building, located at Inyaba-Umudim Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area, came down on Sunday.

After visiting the site to assess the damage, he called the collapse unfortunate. He was relieved that there were no fatalities from the incident.

He mentioned that a notice had been given to people living in a nearby three-storey building for their safety. This is to allow for an integrity test on that building.

Mr Ojukwu stated that all buildings in the area will undergo a mandatory integrity test. Any building that fails this test will be demolished.

"The building was poorly constructed. It was built without the necessary approval from the ministry. It was constructed on a wall fence of an existing three-storey building by a developer,” he said.

He added, "We will evacuate all the occupants of the three-storey building that shares the same compound with the collapsed building."

The commissioner also warned that there will be state-wide demolitions of buildings resting on perimeter fences of other buildings. This includes those that do not follow the set-back rules or lack the proper approval.
