Nigerian writer Charles Ogbu, who started the Leave No One Behind Rural Care Initiative, has urged the government to declare a state of emergency on child abuse. This follows a shocking attack on a young girl in Abia State.
Ogbu made this call in a Facebook post on Monday. He reacted to a viral video that shows a woman attacking a young girl and trying to cut her throat with a knife.
The incident took place at IBB Estate. In the video, the girl is seen crying and begging for help. She shields her throat as the woman threatens her with a knife.
Ogbu condemned the attack, calling it attempted murder. He asked the authorities to ensure that those responsible are punished according to the law.
“I have said it again and again, our society needs to declare a state of emergency on child abuse and violence against children. And offenders deserve nothing but the harshest punishment possible. This is a blight on human civilization.
“Happened today at IBB Estate, Umuahia. I have since forwarded the video to the state government and secured assurances of their prompt action. This is attempted murder!” he wrote.
The incident has caused a lot of anger on social media. Many Nigerians are calling for a full investigation and justice for the child.
