Comedian Brain Jotter speaks out after thugs confront him in Lagos

Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator, Chukwuebuka Amuzie, known as Brain Jotter, has spoken out after thugs harassed him while he was driving in Lagos.

In a post on his Instagram page on Tuesday, the skit maker shared a video and wrote, "Nigerian zoo keepers are the worst. We lack good wild life and they let a lion escape from the zoo this is sad."

The video shows the comedian facing a group of men on a Lagos road. They reportedly blocked him and demanded money before letting him pass.

This incident adds to a growing list of complaints from entertainers, professionals, and everyday people about the actions of area boys, also known as agberos, in Lagos.

Just days before, the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, Saltiana, known as DJ Salt of Life, expressed her frustration after area boys damaged her car in Lagos. They attacked her vehicle, mistaking her for the singer when she did not give them money.

In another recent story, medical doctor Olusina Ajidahun, known as The Bearded Sina, and music video director ThankGod Omori, called TG Omori, both shared how they faced extortion and threats from street touts while doing their jobs in the state. Ajidahun mentioned that touts surrounded a free medical outreach in Mushin and demanded payment under the threat of causing trouble.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has said that the state government is working to arrest and remove street urchins. But he pointed out that cash handouts from celebrities and others are making things worse. These payments encourage the touts to see the streets as a way to make money and create a sense of entitlement among them. He urged the public to come together to help make Lagos safer and more organized.

The post quickly got a lot of reactions. One user, #Daddy_Tweens, said the comedian was talking about people in Lagos who act like wild animals, especially mentioning thugs from the Southwest.

Another commenter, #emmakudos, stated, "Monsters in Lagos like this have been enabled by the government." A third user, #OkonkwoDavidC1 simply commented, "Lagos State and thugs na 5&6."

These reports highlight ongoing worries about extortion, harassment, and vandalism by street touts in places like Lekki, Ajah, Oshodi, Mushin, and Agege. Drivers of expensive cars or those mistaken for celebrities are often targeted.

Brain Jotter’s latest experience once again brings attention to the struggles many face while dealing with Lagos traffic.
