Cross River PDP Chairman Quits After Five Years, Explains Why

Venatius Ikem, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, has stepped down. He said there is a crisis of direction and leadership issues within the party.

Mr Ikem announced his resignation in a letter on his Facebook page on Friday. He explained that he made this decision after thinking about the party’s internal issues and if he could still lead the state chapter.

The resignation is effective immediately, according to the letter sent to the PDP national secretary and the state secretary in Cross River.

"As we enter a critical electoral season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as State Chairman with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course," he wrote.

Mr Ikem pointed out that the party is facing a crisis in direction and leadership. He warned that these problems could affect the efforts and dreams of members who have worked hard for the party's success.

He described his decision as tough but necessary. He mentioned that the current situation challenges the principles, unity, and purpose that should guide the party.

Even with these worries, Mr Ikem thanked the PDP for the five years he served as chairman. He acknowledged party leaders and supporters who stood by him during his time in office.

He specifically thanked Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe for their support during tough times in his political career.

Mr Ikem also recognized Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a key PDP figure. He called Wike's contribution to their shared political efforts unforgettable.

He expressed gratitude to his supporters across Cross River, especially the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty.

Although Mr Ikem did not mention his next political move, his resignation letter hinted that he might be looking for a new direction.

"Life and leadership often require periods of reassessment and renewal. I believe I have reached a moment where a clearer vision and a new pathway are necessary, both for myself and for those who have entrusted me with their confidence and support," he said.

He added that future decisions should be based on purpose, clarity, and a commitment to advancing the people's interests.

Mr Ikem did not explicitly say he was leaving the PDP or mention any other party he might join.

His resignation comes amid ongoing internal disputes within the PDP, which has faced conflicts over leadership and disagreements about its direction before upcoming elections.

Mr Ikem has been linked to Wike’s faction within the PDP due to his past political stance. However, his resignation raises questions about his current political ties.

He concluded his letter by reaffirming his dedication to the progress, stability, and development of Cross River and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP well in its future efforts.
